Edward Kennedy, a nine-times U.S. senator and a towering figure in the Democratic Party died at the age 77, in August 2009, after a year-long battle with cancer.
Ted as the was popularly known had taken the helm of one of America's most fabled political families after his two older brothers, President John F.Kennedy and Senator Robert Kennedy were assassinated,. He was buried at Arlington national Cemetery outside Washington,near the graves of those brothers. He was one of the most influential and senators in U.S. history, a liberal standard-bearer who recovered politically from a string of personal scandals to become a highly respected congressional leader.
