Japan Rejects Conservatives

Japan's opposition swept to a historic victory in election in August 2009, crushing the ruling conservative Liberal Democratic Party the ran the country for most of the postwar era.
While the Democratic Party of Japan won 308 of 480 seats in the lower house of parliament, LDP could muster only 119. Other parties and Independence candidates won a total of 53. The Democrats which already controls the upper house with two allies, held 112 seats in the lower house before it was dissolved in July. The LDP had held 300 seats. Yukio Hatoyama, the leader of the Democrats took over as the new Prime Minister succeeding Taro Aso of the LDP.

This was only the second time the LDP lost the election since it was founded in 1955. The only other time it was out of power was for less that 11 months in 1993-1994, and that was to a coalition of eight parties that quickly collapsed. Japan had three prime minister in three years ,all of whom were deeply unpopular for their lack of leadership and for failing to get the country out of its deepening economic crisis.
