Life Term for an Ex Prez

Taiwan's former President Chen Shuibian and his wife Wu Shu-chen were sentenced for life in September 2009 after being convicted for corruption.
A strong advocate of Taiwan's Independence from China, the 57-year-old Chen led the country for two terms from 2000 to 2008. But in 2008, his Democratic people's party suffered a landslide defeat at the hands of the nationalists.

Chen's troubles began in 2007 when his wife was charged with embezzling government funds. During the rest of his time in the office, he was dogged by similar accusations, and legal cases against several members of his family and inner political circle. Chen branded the allegations as persecution by political rivals who swung the island's approach to China from antagonism to engagement.
